This past weekend, St. Mary’s in Clapham hosted a bake sale for World Gifts! All the proceeds are going towards a fund for a water supply for an entire community! This is a great way to get the whole parish involved and raise money for World Gifts. St. Mary’s sold cakes, brownies and all kinds of desserts that were enjoyed by all. They also had a coffee team on duty who were mixing delicious coffee to enjoy with their desserts. This is an amazing way to bring people together for the holidays and positively change communities.

A community water supply will cost £750, and will supply a constant source of clean water for many people. One example of this World Gift in action was in Uganda when CAFOD was able to fix a waterhole, provide the training and the necessary tools to Cecilia’s community with the proceeds from CAFOD’s community water gift. Cecilia says, “Now we have enough water for food, to clean ourselves and our clothes, and for our animals to drink.” World Gifts such as these will have a lasting impact and can change the lives of many.

Congratulations to St. Mary’s in Clapham, they raised over £600 at their bake sale! This is fantastic!

It was great to hear about the annual garden party organised on June 9 by Freda and John Vine. As well as raising much needed funds for CAFOD it brought together people from across the community. Friends, neighbours and parishioners all came together to lend a hand. They set out the tables and chairs, put up the parasols, baked, made sandwiches, teas and coffees and helped clear away at the end of the afternoon.

Said John: “I’d like to thank everyone who supported our garden party either by coming on the day or making donations of money and raffle tickets or buying plants in advance.

“We raised £570 for CAFOD and special thanks to all who helped in the kitchen preparing and clearing away; those who cooked and donated food and to our two young waitresses who were rushed off their feet by the sheer number of people who joined us to enjoy the sandwiches, cakes and scones, plus many cups of tea and coffee. The sun shone and everyone seemed to enjoy the afternoon. It created a lovely atmosphere in which to support our less fortunate brothers and sisters around the world. We sometimes forget how blessed we are having been born in this country.”

Freda and John, from St. Stephen’s church in Bexley, have been CAFOD volunteers for many years and fundraising is one way they practice their faith, living it out through action.

A huge thank you to Freda and John for their constant support and hard work. We’re already looking forward to next year’s garden party!

John and Freda

Freda and John Vine, held an afternoon tea party to fundraise for CAFOD in June. As volunteers, they organised the event in their garden, attracting numerous visitors.

We would like to warmly thank Freda for this wonderful initiative and commitment. We would also  to give a special thanks to all those who helped. Including those in the kitchen who prepared food and cleared up, and the 4 young “waitresses” who attended on guests. Everyone had a lovely afternoon in Bexleyheath.

A Selection of Cakes

Freda said “We were pleased to welcome Father Jim and Father Romanus from St. Stephen’s Church, along with about 70 other friends, neighbours, parishioners and well-behaved children. Everyone tucked into the sandwiches, cakes and the delicious scones, courtesy of our friend and CAFOD co supporter, Jo Stanton. The tea and coffee were nearly as popular as the soft drinks and water!”

“A total of £626.60 has been raised for CAFOD’s Partners. This included some donations we were pleased to receive from people unable to attend, and from the sale of some plants. £30 worth of donations went to the Greenwich and Bexley Hospice.”

Plants for Sale

Overall, the afternoon was a success. “I spent wonderful afternoon in John and Freda’s lovely garden, eating a delicious afternoon and enjoying the company of all the parishioners that attended.  John and Freda do so much for CAFOD and numerous other charities, and their warmth and enthusiasm was infectious.  It was great to see that they had solar panels on their roof and water butts in the garden – care for God’s creation in action!” Jessica Coffin from CAFOD. “It was so warm that people were seeking shady parts of the garden, and even once the day had cooled down, nobody seemed to want to go home!”

Many thanks for all those who generously donated raffle prizes. We look forward to seeing you all again this time next year.

If you are inspired by Freda and John’s successful fundraiser, we encourage you to organise your own event within your parish and raise money for CAFOD.
