A Creative Christ-The-King Fundraiser!

Christ the King Parish hosted an amazing fundraiser recently. Parishioners gathered for music, fun and dinner to raise money for Cafod’s Cyclones appeal. They also heard a first hand account of the devastation caused by the cyclones and reflected on climate change. Overall they raised £1,700!

What is the Cyclones Appeal?

The appeal is to help those affected by Cyclone Idai, which ripped through Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Malawi earlier this year, as well as Cyclone Kenneth, which hit Mozambique just five weeks later.

An estimated 1000 were killed and tens of thousands were made homeless. CAFOD is currently in the countries, distributing safe, clean water, hygiene kits and emergency supplies. “There are still lives to be saved, and communities who need our help. We cannot delay reaching those in urgent need.” Says CAFOD’s Director, Christine Allen.

This appeal was close to Ewan’s heart, so he decided to organise a local music night to raise money for the urgent cause.

There was live jazz and salsa music from three talented parishioners

On Saturday 22nd June, in Wimbledon Park, Ewan and his girlfriend’s weeks of hard work paid off. 60 Parishioners of all ages gathered at Christ-the-King Parish for a fun music evening, to raise money for Cafod’s Cyclones appeal. A music quiz was interspersed with live jazz and salsa style performances from three talented parishioners. Vegetarian food was cooked and donated for all attendees, and the bar was flowing.

Overall £1,700 was raised over the evening, through ticketed entry and a raffle!

Not just about fundraising

During the fundraising event parishioners heard about the devastation caused by Cyclone Idai in Mozambique.

The event wasn’t just about fundraising, as important as that is in keeping CAFOD’s life saving work afloat. Ewan also raised awareness through the event of the disaster, and the changes in climate that have contributed to such weather-related disasters.

“We heard from one parishioner whose colleague has spent months working out in Beira, a city decimated by the flooding.” said Ewan. “We reflected too on Pope Francis’ urgent call for collective responsibility in Laudato Si’ and we all wrote a pledge on how to reduce our impact on climate change.”

The evening finished with a sing a long, with plans for a repeat event next year.
