Become an Office Volunteer for CAFOD! It is a great way to get involved in your community and see how the results of your work can make an impact. Develop new skills, meet new people, and help out your community and CAFOD! Hear from two of our office volunteers on what it entails
Becoming an office volunteer is an easy process and allows for a flexible schedule. The responsibilities of an office volunteer may include data entry, handling correspondence via email and telephone, and collaborating with volunteer coordinators to support other volunteers. Without our office volunteers CAFOD would not be able to accomplish as much as we do.
Hear from Office Volunteer Natalie
Natalie has been interning with us since August. She is an American student studying in London for the fall semester. Hear from her perspective as an office volunteer,
“I love being an office volunteer, I have learned so much! The schedule has been really flexible with my studies and CAFOD is willing to work with me to find the times that work best. I have gained new office skills. I was able to practice and improve my public speaking skills as I gave one of the Fast Day talks in a parish. CAFOD gave me all the resources to give a successful speech. I have also developed great communication skills as I have corresponded with parish volunteers through emails and phone calls to help them find the resources necessary for Harvest Family Fast Day. I have also developed my communication and teamwork skills in CAFOD because we work on a lot of projects together, give each other feedback, and help encourage each other’s growth. It is so nice to learn from all ages of volunteers who have different levels of experience and knowledge because they bring new ideas and perspectives that I would never have thought of before. How inspiring it is that they volunteer with us during the day and sacrifice their time!
CAFOD is a great place to work. A couple weeks ago I was able to go to a lunch lecture and learn about how a team in Africa has been helping a village develop sustainable farming techniques. Often CAFOD has events such as this going on every week to hear about what the different departments are up to and how CAFOD has been helping the world. Not only is CAFOD a place to learn new skills but it is also a place to learn how campaigns such as Harvest Family Fast Day can really make an impact on the world. Just last week I was able to help out at an ‘On the Move’ event for local schools to help educate students on the journeys of refugees. There is always something exciting to do, they keep me on my toes with new tasks.“
Hear from our office volunteer in Bromley, Liz!
“I volunteer at the Bromley office every Thursday, usually between 10 and 3.30. I support the schools’ visit co-ordinator by updating the CAFOD activity log for all the school visits by our volunteers, and then saving the details in our files. When visit numbers are low, I do other admin tasks, such as updating spreadsheets or stuffing letters or making phone calls to schools. I also enjoy tasks where I have to do a bit of detective work……it is fairly easygoing!
I found the volunteering role on the ‘Do-it’ website about 18 months ago. I had just left a full-time admin job in a school and wanted some regular volunteering to do. I also have several other volunteering interests. The application process was not difficult as I applied on ‘Do-it’ and was called back quite soon. I then had to fill in some forms and have a DBS check.
I enjoy working in the Bromley office, everyone is so friendly. When you have been used to working full time, volunteering keeps you in the mix; I’m not ready for an armchair and slippers yet!”
No matter what age, skill level, or interests, becoming an Office Volunteer with CAFOD is a great way to develop office skills to build up your resume, or help out your community and the world!
