Romero Centenary Mass at St. George’s Cathedral on Saturday 12th August

By Nicole Crosbourne – CAFOD Volunteer

This Saturday, 12th August the Archbishop Romero Trust will be holding a centenary mass at St. George’s Cathedral, to celebrate 100 years since the birth of Oscar Romero.

Blessed Oscar Romero

Blessed Oscar Romero

All throughout 2017, the charity have been celebrating the Archbishop Romero Centenary through services, events and talks taking place throughout the UK. We are very fortunate to be hosting the centenary at St. George’s Cathedral, home to the Romero Cross.

Romero stood alongside his people facing terrible oppression and violence, as they spoke out against injustice. He is remembered for his courage, his faith and above all, his great love for the poor. Romero is an inspiration today, and CAFOD is continuing to support partners in El Salvador in conjunction with this year’s Harvest Fast Day Appeal. Just as Romero did, CAFOD knows about the needs of the world’s poorest communities and aims to bring hope and compassion to them, to end poverty and injustice.

The mass will be conducted by the Principal Celebrant Archbishop Peter Smith, Archbishop of Southwark. Archbishop Vincenzo Paglia, Postulator of Romero’s Cause in Rome, will be visiting especially for the occasion and giving a homily as part of the mass. After, there will be a reception taking place in Amigo Hall, Lambeth Road, where refreshments and a toast will be served. Romero Trust will also be showing an excellent new Romero film at 2.30pm from Swiss-Italian TV.

All are welcome to attend and join us in commemorating the life, martyrdom and legacy of Archbishop Romero, whilst continuing to pray for his imminent canonisation. Join us on Saturday 12th August, 12:30pm at St. George’s Cathedral, Southwark, London, SE1 7HY.
