When sexual and gender based violence is used as a weapon of war, it can destroy communities and hamper the development of entire nations. When it happens in the home, it destroys relationships and undermines communities and nations.
16 days of activism against gender violence is an annual global campaign to raise awareness and galvanise action to end sexual and gender-based violence. The campaign started on 25 November, International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and ends on 10 December, International Human Rights Day. The dates symbolically link violence against women and human rights and emphasise that such violence is a violation of human rights.
CAFOD will be using the 16 days of activism against gender violence to speak out with like-minded organisations to raise awareness about gender-based violence, to share strategies and to demonstrate our solidarity with survivors.
Over the 16 days we will be sharing on the CAFOD website, stories and voices from around the world which examine how we can work to end sexual violence. Read one such story about how our partners are changing attitudes towards FGM in northern Kenya
